[Bao Xiang Ning Hui Zhong Tang | Cinnabar Shen Po Ancient Buddha Heart]
This scroll inherits Yuan Weng's Zen philosophy of "splashing and writing from the same source." The flowing folds of the robes resemble the iron drapings of Dunhuang's flying apsaras, while the overlapping colors of the lotus pedestal fuse with the mineral colors of Tang Dynasty murals to create a dense, rich, and vibrant color scheme. The ancient technique of nine-stroke and eight-dyeing techniques on Xuan paper creates a lush, azurite-green hue that alludes to the profound principle of "the mutual transformation of color and emptiness" as described in Dafengtang Notes. The reproduction technique meets the rigorous standards of Tantric Buddhist sutra copying, with each inch meticulously refined for half a century. Compared to more common Buddhist reproductions, this work reveals the influence of his later splashing ink techniques. This is more than a mere reproduction of the solemnity of the Dharma image; it truly fuses the spiritual charm of Qingcheng's misty clouds with the shimmering light of the Western Regions. This offering is a contemporary example of the Zen spirit of painting and ink that continues the legacy of "Water Moon Guanyin."
