[Dunhuang Flying Apsaras Eight-panel Screen | Color ink blends the charm of the heyday of the Tang Dynasty]
This group inherits the mastery of Daqian's "magnificent heavy color" technique. The graceful figures resemble the vibrant colors of the Mogao Grottoes murals on rice paper, while the graceful garments and sashes evoke the powder-based patterns of the Three Tang dynasties, creating a new realm of modern splash-color. The specially crafted rice paper undergoes nine copies and eight dyeings, and the mineral colors blended with glue evoke the principle of "color and ink complementing each other" as outlined in his "Dafengtang Copying Notes." The reproduction technique is meticulously crafted to the level of "heavy color mastery," with each panel receiving a two-century Dunhuang coloring process. Compared to more common figure reproductions, this group reveals a distinct connection between the Northern Wei Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty. Beyond capturing the essence of form and spirit, this museum-quality paper piece fuses Buddhist art with the literati's brushwork, offering a glimpse into the true Dunhuang spirit of the "Donor Portrait."
